As with nearly everything in life, planning plays a major role in avoiding problems down the road. The same principle applies even to building websites. Planning a website carefully ensures full functionality, while minimizing if not avoiding potential problems along the way.
The first step of planning a website is determining its purpose. Websites can be built for a variety of reasons, whether for online sales of products, services, and information, gathering and disseminating information, membership, communication with members or customers, creating mailing lists, and training among others. For businesses, building a website gives them an online presence that establishes them as a current and legitimate company.
The next step in website planning is analyzing the target audience. Factors such as age, gender, social class, education, religion, political views, and personal interests can help determine a website's target audience. It is important to first identify the business's target audience, and then build the website for them.

After the purpose and target audience have been identified, the next step involves the technical aspect of the build. Aside from the aesthetics and ensuring the web design and layout is pleasing to the eye, site navigation also needs to be carefully laid out.
When planning a website it is also important to consider search engine visibility. Access to third-level pages from the home page should be no more than just a few clicks away. This makes it easier for visitors to access information form the website, and encourage them to do more business. This step also helps make the website more visible to search engines by making the site easier to index, possibly giving it a higher rank in the search engines search results page.
Even if a website is easily indexed by search engines, it would still be useless if it does not establish the business's identity on the World Wide Web. Its design must reflect the company's goals and ideals. This is crucial in planning a website for business purposes.

Another crucial component for business web site prototype is implementing appropriate payment options. The website should have shopping cart software and checkout systems that can be easily accessed by visitors.
